Final Reflection of the Show project 'Lines'

"Using your experiences on this project and relating your programmes to other webisodes you have researched, discuss how taking account of the online audience affects the process of showing creative work"

Online shows vs Television shows

There is a great diference between television and online shows, with shows such as Family guy and Little britain, which you used to be able to watch on televsion only have now recently moved over to the online format, with the site best known as 'bbc catch up' or as it is fully known 'BBC I-player'. With this new format of watching tv shows online, shows how the two formats of online and tv have converged to give us as the viewers the chance to watch waht we have missed not only by watching it on our televisions but online aswell.

The fact that you can now watch shows online has proven the fact that television shows, do not have to be television based, but also computer based aswell, which makes it easier and more accessable for many people / fans. With devices such as the I-Phone and other mobile devices viewers can now watch their desierd shows where ever they want to on the move, which meant a great increase in the number of viewers for television shows - turned web-shows by being placed on the bbc-i player.

The fact that the online format for tv shows has come around is a massive reason why webseries or webisodes have become much more popular. webisodes or web shows such as 'Chad vader' have been around for a few years, but have recently become much more popular, which is mainly due to the fact of there being a much wider range of online viewers, mainly due to the fact that television is slowly moving onto the online format, which has a huge fan based background to it.

The fact that television is merging itno the online format is another big reason why webisodes are created, it is cheaper, easier, and most important of all it is easier for them to get noticed, rather than going htrough the expensive and very time consuming process of getting your show put onto tv, hence why people rather place their shows on the internet and call them 'webisodes'.

Marketing for 'Lines'

After we had planned to create our webseries, we started to plan on what would be the best possible ways to market / advertise the actual webisodes. Our first thoughts were to create a facebook page, as this is vital to grab the attention of our target audience, whom is around (15-upwards). We believe that this age range is perfect for our webseries as it suits the theme of detention very well.

After deciding that we would set up a facebook group, we then decided to research into other possible social netweorking sites which we could use, sites such as twitter, and myspace where the other two social networking sites which we first decide to create along side our facebook group.

We set to work on creating the three social networking sites (twitter, facebook and myspace). We had specific roles for each social networking site, and they were as follows: Twitter: To update the fans on what we were doing and also the process of each episode. Facebook: To find cast members for the auditions and also to inform people of the progress of each episode (upcoming episodes etc), and also to show of photos of us at work on the production of the series, and finally Myspace: Due to the lack of users who now use myspace, apart from local bands, we diecided to create a myspace in order to find a local band who would be able to offer us their music to use for our webseries, it was also a good tool for the bands to know about our upcomming webisodes.

Apart from internet pages and websites etc, we did also use a more oridinnary advertising teqnique. We decided in order to gain as many fans and as many views as possible from our target audience then, what is better than advertising in and around our own college (Long road). So after discussion we all deicded that to create a poster for the launch of each episode would be a very wise move in order to gain as many views as possible, so taht is what we done. We created 3 posters for each episode launch. We placed up the posters in and around the college 2-3 days before the launch of each episode (aprox). Unfortunatley we were unable to place up the 3rd episode poster due to the lack of time, but as for the other posters we managed to place them up on time, which gained us many more views than we could of thought for, which was of course very good indeed, and meant an increadse in the number of fans / comments we recieved.

The main website which we used was of course, youtube, as this was where we uploaded all of our videos including (the auditions right the way through to the actual episodes themselves).
We used this as both a marketing tool and also the main place of which our fans / viewers can actually view our webshows.

Feedback on 'Lines'

Overall the feedback which we recieved on our episodes was pretty average, and unfortunatly not to the amount which I personally thought. I believe that the repsonse which our 1st episode was very good! For a first episode launch it was very successful and gaind much interest, with the views going over 100 within the first hour I was sure that Lines was going up and up from then on out, but unfortunatly from the showing of the 2nd episode the views seemed to go down.

The views were up in the hundreds within the first hour of relasing the 1st ever episode of lines but as I mentioned above, for the 2nd episode the views were not as high. By the 2nd day of placing the 2nd episode on youtube the views were barely over 100 which was of course not living up to the expectations of both us as a group and the fans.

The lack of views could of well been the fact that we have had a decrease in the number of fans, or the simple fact that we did not publicise the showing if the 2nd episode as much of the 1st, but I am sure that we kept all of our advertising to one single level, in order to achieve a high amount of views or as high as we could get them every time an episode was launced, but unfortunatley this was untrue, and the case of the matter is, is that the views / comments we recieved on both the 2nd and 3rd epsidoe were definatley not as high as I personally would of thought we could achieve, neither am I unimpressed or impressed by this.

I am very bewildered by the fact that we recieved these viewing stats on our episodes, I think it is interesting and important to take into account, about how the views ofr any webseries can be up and one point in time and down in other points, so overall the views and comments which we have recieved during the time of this project have been up and down and we have recieved some valuable data and knowledge from this.

Overall conclussion of project

I strongly believe that by creating this online series 'Lines'. we have recieved a varied amount of views and comments, which we would never of recieved if we would of produced a show for television or any other format such as dvd.

The fact that this was an online based project, and the fact that we had an active audience completley different to the other formats of media, then we recieved both very good knowledge of the product we had created and the views of other people on it. After many comments and many websites created I can suggest that the internet is indeed a better place inorder to gain experiance, views, opinions, guidlines, and much, much more on the media products which you create, it is the comments and feedback inwhich you reciweve from the active audience in the online world, which really does make the differnce to your finished product.

Another reason why the online audience is affeting our creative work as the practitioner, is the fact that they cna get more activiliy involed with anything and everything. Once the video is online people have the freedom to alter or suggest alterations to the product itself. For example if the viewers really wished to they could download our finished webisode and then reedit it into their desierd video, or even suggest ways inwhich we could do that ourselfs, it is these sorts of comments / aspects which make the online audience so different to the other audiences of which we usually dispaly our work towards, so overall if there is one thing which I have learnt during this process of using the online format for uploading our webseires is this:

"Peoples views are different online than in real life, people may be tougher and harder on their opinions, but it is these which are most valuable and these which make the most difference to the finished product and future ones to come".

Lines – Focus Group Discussion Transcript

Lines – Focus Group Discussion

-Transcript-

(Show first episode)

1) What do you think of the concept of lines?

“Yeah, I think it’s quite a good concept. It plays on a good concept. Like Recess in the 90’s, like that, was a really good series or the breakfast club, and it puts an original spin on it, so yeah, I think it was really good!”

2) Overall, what did you think of the first episode?

“It introduced the characters well, so you get to know each one of their stories, and sets it up really well, so you should be able to get the people interested and find out more.”

“It was good introducing the character at the end it makes you want to watch the next one”
What were the strengths and weaknesses?

“It was written well”

“The camera shots were put together really well!”

“Had good timing, bringing the different camera shots in”

“I shouldn’t have put my legs up when Zeke was doing his bit, as you can see my legs in the
background!”

3) Did episode 1 make you feel like you wanted to carry on watching future episodes?

“Yeah, it was intriguing”

(Show second episode)

4) What do you think is different from the 1st episode?

“Unlike in the first episode, where it was introducing the characters, the 2nd episode is different
because it is playing to what these characters are like, so it’s a good marketing technique because people are like ‘why is this character like this’, and then they watch the first episode as well”

5) What did you think of the second episode?

“Overall it was quite good. It added new layers to the characters, added humor into it as well, like the ‘super spy’.

What were the strengths and weaknesses?
(None Mentioned)

(Show third episode)

6) Do you like how the story has progressed over the series?

“Yeah, I like how the characters have developed, and you learn a bit more about them”

“There are also more things that you find out, which make you want to find out more, like the phone call, because makes you curious as to what’s happening there”

7) What did you think of the third episode?

“I thought it was good, I liked how it showed a bit of the episode before within the title sequence, and thought it was pretty good”

What were the strengths and weaknesses?

“Weakness id say, was a couple of Long pauses which I thought broke it up a bit too much”

8) What would you like to see in future episodes?

“Let Megan swear you can’t say she raises two fingers simultaneously and not make her do it!”

(Would you want a change of location/ characters etc?)

“I suppose a different location would be good!”

“Be interesting to have them break out and running about!”

Overall questions

9) What ways did the characters appeal to you?

What did you like about them and the social groups they represented?

“Quite a good covering of all social groups”

“Shows someone from each social setting”

“Allows everyone to identify with at least one character”

10) Do you think ‘Lines’ was marketed well?

“Yeah, I heard it from facebook

“I saw the posters”

11) Are there any other ways you think we could promote the series of lines?

(Not including facebook, myspace, twitter etc?)

“Put a notice in the register”

“If you have a friend who done another web series online, could advertise in them”

12) Would you look forward to an episode four?

“Yeah!”

Google - search

After looking into the way in which we have advertised our 'Lines' webseries, I decided to search for our series through the popular search engine, which is 'google'.

My first search which I typed into google was for 'Lines'. Once I had typed this word into the search bar, it came up with a variety of websites on the front page, and none of which were our actual webseires. I was expecting this as the word 'Lines's is a very common word, so I believed there to be many websites relating to the word 'lines' which were not actually to do with our webseries at all.

Shown below is a screen shot to show my first google search:

My seccond search which I typed into google was for the word / sentance 'Lines Webseries'. I was expecting to find our webseires on the front page of google, as there are no other webseires called Lines, or so I believe, but I was shocked to find that there was no website, or social networking page of ours on the front page, which is possibly due to the fact that we did not link our webpages together, or advertise our webseires enough online.

Shown below is a screen shot to show my seccond google search:

My thrid search which I typed into google was for the word / sentance 'Lines Facebook', I decided to type this in as we have a facebook page specifically for our webseries, and I thought that it would definatly appear in the top 10 listings on the fornt page of google due to the specific name which we gave our facebook, but unfortunatly this was not true, and out page did not appear on the front page, this is most likely because there are other popular facebook pages with the word lines within the title, or could also be the fact that we did not link many pages to our facebook page.

Shown below is a screen shot to show my thrid google search:

My forth and final google search was for the word / sentance 'Lines CDfilms'. I decided to search for this as it is more specific and relates more closely to what our webseires includes. The Lines part is of course the name of our webseires, and the CD Films part of the search is our production company for the webseires, I believed that the combination of these two words would bring up a more defined search result, and to my surprise it did, and it brough up allot more linking websites, including: Youtube, twitter and vimeo. This was a good result! Taking into account that if we are to recieve new fans then they would also have to type in lines cdfilms instead of just lines, and htis could indeed cause a problem, as many people will just type in lines, and in doing so would discover a very limited search result which did not even include our webseires, so the basic searching for our webseries for new fans, is a possible problem not for now but for the future due to the lack of fans.

Audience research (Episodes 1,2,3)

After looking back at episode 3 and the comments that we have received as-well as the views, I can see that we have received 2 comments and 217 views on episode three of 'lines'. I believe that this is not as high as I first expected it to be. I believe that my first thoughts of the views going up was incorrect after looking back at the views for episode 2 & 3 compared with episode 1.

Overall I believe the reason why the views are not as high as episode 1 for episodes 2 & 3 is most likely to be the fact that people have lost interest with our show, but I am sure that the views will pick up gradually over time. Also another reason why our views may not be very high, is possibly because we have under-publicized episodes 2 & 3 compared with episode 1. We could of published the posters around on other websites such as face punch where there are many viewers / users who could of potentially become fans of the lines web series by now.

Here is a screen shot of the views / comment on episode 3:

Todays lesson plan (After focus group discussion)

In todays session I have asked people to work on the following tasks

Tim - Personal blog work
Matt - Edit the footage shot in todays focus group discussion
Tara - Type up about today on her own blog and also update the documents in the group folder
Sam - Personal blog work (catch up)
Dave - Same as above*
Mike - Contact cast / people who attended the focus group discussion and thank them / Personal blog work
Ash - Personal blog work
Myself - Work on uploading and editing the audio from todays focus group discussion

Focus group discussion

At the start of todays session, I was informed by Matt and Mike that the times for the focus group discussion were changed from 12.20 too 1.05. This was a problem at first but I worked on organizing the group ready for the new session which was now at 1:05. After discussion with Nick (Teacher) he was ok with the new plan but was slightly annoyed when we informed him of the changed plan.
In order to get everything organized I have done the following things:
Informed everyone in the group of the new time (1.05) (Myself)

Made sure new request forms were completed ready for the new time / focus group discussion (Tara)

Made sure that everyone was briefed about the discussion (people who are attending) Also make sure that they ALL sign model release forms (Mike)

Scout for new location / room (Me and mike)

Once request form is completed ask Tim and Sam to prepare equipment (Zoom Mic and Hd camera)

Sorted out my laptop and took it to the room (so that they could view the episodes) (Myself)
During the focus group discussion today people have done the following things:
Sam - Recorded audio with zoom mic (for transcript)
Tara - Question prompter
Mike - Question Prompter
Tim - Camera operator
Matt - Photographer
Myself - Chairman (Minutes)
Here are some photos from todays focus group discussion (Taken by Matt) :

In this photo you can see Tim who was the Camera Operator for todays discussion
This a photo which shows sam (Far left) , myself (Left of Sam) , Tara (Left of me) and Mike (Closest to camera) , also you can see the people who attended todays interview

Final prepation for focus group discussion

As a group we have prepared 2 majour documents for tomorrows discussion, which were:

1 - Questions for discussion

2 - Feedback slips

Another very important form which was completed ready for tomorrows discussion was the request form for the equipment we are going to use in tomorrows group discussion.

This evening I have contacted 2 cast members and invited them to come along to the discussion, so far I have had a reply from one of the cast members whom is Elliot, unfortunatly Angelica has not texted me back so I am unsure as to weather she will be attending the discussion or not.
After a brief discussion with Mike he informed me that Cathrine would be coming to the discussion, so this is good, as the group did decide that 2-3 cast members and 2-3 fans from facebook would be good for the discussion, in order to recieve a wider range of feedback.

As for Facebook fans / other people other than the cast, I am unsure as to weather there will be Facebook fans attending, but before 12.20 tomorrow I will enusre that I have spoken to the other membersi n the group to make sure that everything is organised prior to the actual discussion, things such as people attending the discussion and equipment for it are very important to the overall success of the discussion, so I will do my very best in order to make sure the group is organised and that every thing is ready for the discussion.

Once in the discussion I will continue to try my best to keep everything running smoothly and ensure that everyone speaks their opinions / views, but of course I MUST keep in mind the time scale which we have to work within which is unfortunatly only 45/50 mins which of course is a very tight time to stick to, but I am confident that if the group works together then we should be able to get the discussion completed on time, and therefore collect some very good feedback from it.

My task after the meeting tomorrow is to listen to the audio feedback from the zoom mic, I will then type up the audio feedback onto the main group blog and my own personal blog, I will then evaluate the feedback we have recieved, during the discussion.

I will organise roles / tasks for people to do during tomorrows lesson at 1:05, I have a rough idea of what people in the group will be doing but I am not 100% sure as to weather they will have other things to do or not and to weather they will have to edit the footage from the discussion etc, it also depends on weather we are working on this project tomorrow or another one, which of course would mean that our attention will be diverted from this 'Lines' work for the show unit and instead we will be focused on another project.

Audience research (Episodes 1,2,3)

I have looked at the comments we have received on all our episodes and I have then placed them comments into wordle. Is a website which makes art out of words.

Here is the wordle image for episode 1:

Here is the wordle image of episode 2:

I was unable to create a wordle image for episode 3 because there has not been any comments (this is probably due to the fact that episode 3 has only been online for few days, and it will take a while for comments to generate)

Here is a screen shot to show that we have received 0 views on episode 3:

Lesson review

In todays session there have been a few disruptions which has meant that members of our group have been pre-occupied with the other project, which meant that they could not do the tasks which I had planned for them, but I soon resolved this by simply switching roles / people around so that the tasks where covered / done in todays session.

I have also organised for the discussion / feedback session tomorrow, I have also added information to my personal blog (such as wordle images etc)

The people whom where working on the other project were: Sam & Ash, Also Dave was absent in todays session so this means that I will have to contact him and inform him of tomorrows discussion

Here is a list of tasks which were completed in todays session:

Request forms for equipment for tomorrows discussion (Tara)
Questions for the discussion / focus group (Mike & Tara)
Feedback slips for after tomorrows discussion (Tara)
Posters for episode 2 have been printed and placed into the group folder (Tara)
Contacted face book fans / cast members inviting them to the discussion (Mike)
Room has ben booked for tomorrows discussion (Tim)
Worked on personal blog work to atch up (due to a university interview) (Matt)
Put links onto main 'Lines' blog page (Tara)

Here are some photos which I took in todays session:

In this photo you can see my notepad where I have written down the plan for todays lesson and also written out some general tasks for people to do in todays lesson

In this photo you can see Mike who is in the process of contacting the fans / cast of Lines and inviting them to attend the Focus Group discussion tomorrow

In this photo you can see Tara and Tim who are working on wordle, in order to create an image of the comments / feedback Lines has recieved so far

This photo is showing the finished Question sheet, for tomorrows discussion / feedback session (Created by Mike & Tara)

In this Photo you can see Tara and Tim who are preparing the comment / feedback slips for the group feedback session tomorrow

In this photo you can see the completed feedback slips, that we will sue in tomorrows discussion / feedback session

Plan for todays lesson / tomorrows discussion

In todays lesson I have organized tasks for each person in the group to work on.
After reviewing how the group works, I believe that they all work very well in pairs rather than when they work individually, so I planned to keep people in pairs during todays lesson.

Here is the plan for todays:

In todays session I have personally organized tasks for people within the group to work on during todays lesson, I have also had to change the plan slightly due to people having to catch up with their blog work and also working on other projects.

Think of some questions / topics for the focus group discussion tomorrow, then print off 3 copies (1 for Tara and 1 for Myself then 1 spare copy) check through questions with Nick (Project leader / teacher) Also create and print off feedback slips for the cast / attendees of the discussion to fill in at the end (Mike and Tara)

Print out new request forms to request equipment for tomorrows focus group discussion, Print out posters (episode 1-3) for folder (Tim & Tara)

Create graphs for views (episode 1-3) then write up on personal blog (Sam)

Same as above, plus update face book, myspace, twitter etc (Ash & Dave)

After making sure everyone knew what it was they had to do in todays lesson, I then organized the role list for tomorrows focus group discussion.

The roles for tomorrows focus group are as follows:

Sam - Zoom mic operator
Tim - Camera operator
Tara- Question prompter (Directs questions to group)
Myself - Chair of meeting / discussion (I will make sure that the discussion is running smoothly)

Rest of the group (Mike/Ash/Dave/Matt) Attend meeting and raise questions / queries

Before tomorrows discussion we need to organize / sort out the following materials:

Request form for (Zoom Mic, HD camera, Room D7)
Questions for the focus group discussion
Organize roles and ensure everyone is ok with their roles
Contact cast / fans who will be attending the discussion and ensure they can still attend
Inform the cast / fans who will be attending and make sure they know what time the discussion is and where it is being held
Create and print off feedback slips for end of discussion for further feedback

Audience research (Episodes: 1,2,3)

I have looked into the views we have received for all of our episodes and I have placed this information into graphs.

Shown below is a table which I created in order to show the amount of views we have received between the dates of (21st January - 31st January) (On all lines episodes)

(Data from youtube)

Shown below is a pie-chart which shows the different places, where people have viewed our lines episodes:

Views on episode 3 'Lines'

So far we have received 120 views on episode three, this is not as high as I expected, and unfortunately has a lower percentage of views compared with the 1st episode which recieved over 100 views within the first hour or so. Considering that this third episode has been out since 1st night (7pm) and the views are at 200, which of course is not as high as the 1st / 2nd episode, which could possibly mean a drop in fans, but I believe that in time the views will increase as more people stat watching the 'lines' web-series.

Shown below is a screen grab which shows the front page of episode 3 (showing the views we have had so far:

Graphs to show the views / comments on episode 3:

(As you can see from this graph, there is not enough views or comments in order for the graph to show any graphical information, so I will look into the graphs etc when we receive more views / comments)

Shown below is a pile of peer & teacher feedback we recieved as a group on our 2nd epsisode of Lines (And also you can see my notebook with notes on todays lesson and the plan for the week ahead)

Lesson / final week planning

After the group feedback discussion on our 2nd episode, I organized the group so that we could discuss what we as a group would do in this final week of the show project.

In the group discussion we discussed about what we would do during this lesson today and also what we would have to get done by the deadline (on monday).

The first thing which we discussed was what our teacher set us as a group to produce which was:

You also need to do some 'qualitative' research; it is suggested that you assemble a 'focus group' of viewers for a group discussion which you could tape on thursday afternoon. The tape should then be transcribed and analysed by the group on Friday. What are the significant features of how they respond to your programmes? is there a difference between responses to eps 1,2 and 3?

After I looked at this task, I then set to organising what we would do as a group for the group discussion about our web-series, inorder to colllect some qualitaive feedback. We as a group decided on this:

We as a group would hold a group discussion with 2 cast members or more and 2 face book fans or youtube viewers (who attend long road). who would attend the focus group discussion.

We as a group then deicded to give each person specific roles for hte discussion, shown below are the roles and whom will be doing each role:

Tim - Camer operator (to film the discussion)

Sam - Sound (Zoom mic - to record the opinions voiced during the discussion

Mike / Matt - Questions for the focus group meeting

Myself - photography / minutes of meeting

Rest of the group - Attend the meeting to raise any answers / questions

After the main task for thursday was discussed, I then set to work on reminding the people within the group of what it was they had to do this lesson.

Shown below is a list of jobs which were completed in todays session:

Request form for use of microphone (Tara)
Create posters to advertise thrid episode launce (Tara & Tim)
Edit episode three ready for tonights launch (Matt & mike)
Updates on facebook, twitter, facepunch etc (Ash & Dave)
Update personal blog (Sam)
Set up facebook event for 3rd episode launch (Tara & Tim)

In todays lesson I typed up the feedback which we recieved on our 2nd episode onto both the group blog and also my own persona blog, I also organised the group folder and added any paper work which was given to me i.e. posters and request form etc

Peer/Teacher feedback on episode 2

In todays session we have received peer & teacher feedback on our 2nd episode of 'Lines'.

Peer feedback
  • A couple of interesting shots
  • Strange narrative, cannot understand it (7 People mentioned this)
  • Cuts well
  • Characters work well
  • Sound levels are high & low (5 people mentioned this)
  • Taster bit / preview works well (3 people mentioned this)
  • Too much in one content in one episode (2 people mentioned this)
  • Good angles used
  • Jumps too much
  • Pointless shots used
  • Confusing genre (comedy or drama?)
  • Acting is not very good, could be better
  • Spy could of been done better, e.g appears in the room like is the skeleton
  • Silent moments ned sorting out
  • Need quicker cuts
  • Continuity works well
  • 'Jaws' sound / music cuts in too suddenly & drops out to early

Teacher feedback (Pete)
  • Continuity with previous episode (costume, scripting) works well
  • Elliot's character has been developed well
  • Use of jaws music?
  • Suddenly goes silent
  • Much better editing than the 1st episode
  • Add footage, where it goes black / silent?
  • Like the taster for episode 3 at the end

After looking back at the feedback we as a group have recieved today, I can clearly see that there are a few very important issues which could do with changing, but of course episode three is already in the editing process so all that we can do as a group is to do any editorial changes, and do the best we can to adress any other errors / issues with it.

The main areas of concern raised in todays feedback session were:

  • The sound levels are still not correct
  • The story line is confusing
  • Too much in one episode

If we as a group were to create another episode of 'Lines' (episode 4) then these would of course be at the top of my list as to what to bring to every ones attention during the shoot, but as I mentioned before, episode 3 is the final episode of lines, so if there are issues with the sound levels, story line or content, then there is not much we cna do, apart from do the best we can within the editorial stage of production. The fact that we cannot correct much now iss mainly due to the fact that the 3rd episode is due to be released onto youtube tonight at 7pm, and due to this deadline we are unable to re-shoot any errors within the final episode.

Overall the feedback that we recieved was very fair in my mind, and has given both me and the other members of the group a great inisght into where this webisode series has come and gone during these past few weeks, including the down sides and up sides of the filming, productions, and publising process.
